Jessica Mendoza and Spirit T were named (6 July 2016) as travelling reserves for the British Showjumping squad, looking to retain their 2012 title, at the Rio Olympics.
Jess will be supporting the showjumping team of four, named yesterday as:
• Ben Maher MBE (33) with Tic Tac
• Nick Skelton OBE (58) with Big Star
• John Whitaker MBE (60) with Ornellaia
• Michael Whitaker (56) with Cassionato
It will be Nick Skelton’s seventh Games and his second on Big Star, while Ben also makes a repeat appearance, but this time with Tic Tac. It will be John Whitaker’s sixth Olympic Games having first helped Britain take Team Silver in Los Angeles back in 1984; alongside his younger brother Michael, for whom this will be his 5th games.
It will be 20 year old Jessica’s first experience of an Olympic Games, a remarkable achievement having only moved to senior international competition 2 years ago and having already become the 6th top Brit in the world rankings.
“I’m really excited. It’s going to be a brilliant learning experience and an honour to go to Rio as a member of the Team GB squad. I think we have a strong, experienced team and I look forward to supporting them and being on standby if I’m needed.”
